Inspired by the Halo novels, not the game.
Saraku ran for her life, throwing herself to the ground behind a boulder to avoid the blast from the grenade. As dirt and rocks showered down on her, she grabbed one of her own grenades from her thigh loop, pulled the pin and tossed it to the other side of the boulder, not even flinching as the ground rumbled beneath her from the ensuing destruction. She checked the ammo counter on her semi-automatic rifle - down to 50, and she only had one full clip left - made sure she had a frim grip, and stood up, turning around as she did so.
Why did these things have to be so ugly? She pushed the thought out of her head as she pounded the swarm of goblin-like creatures. She picked her targets carefully so as to not waste her precious ammunition. Within seconds they reached the boulder, and she was off again, sprinting toward a cliff about half-a-mile away, tossing a grenade when she felt they were too close.
All to soon she was near the cliff edge. She dropped her last grenade and used the shockwave to propel herself out as far away from the cliff-face as possible. Saraku free fell for a full 10 seconds before punching the button on her chest. The breath left her lungs explosively as she was jerked away from gravity, the five-foot-long titanium sheets shooting out of their storage unit behind her munitions pack - which now flapped around, empty. She flicked her eyelids at a menu on the inside of her visor, and a program popped up. She used her cranial implants to program in a course for her jet-propelled wings to take her to Kriganic Fort, the temporary C&C for this planet's defense against the aliens known as Horde.
That done, she glanced back at the cliff, now almost two miles behind her. She could just make out the aliens standing on the edge, and some that had tried to grab her out of the air and now lay in pieces on the rocks on the shore of the huge bronze-colored ocean. Some of them even pumped out a few energy rounds, which fell amusingly short. She couldn't help but chuckle - it was just too funny.
Saraku concentrated on filing her post-mission report, hoping to have it done before she got back to Base.
